The squalor and the rats
Drinking soda from vending machines
Down in the mess hall at Walter Reed

These soldiers gave their level best
It was not theirs to question why
Up armored Hummers was all they asked
But tonight their mothers will cry

You see them in the strip malls
Khakis and boots across the land
Heading of for sands of Iraq
Or the mountains of Afghanistan
