More Perfect Union ~~~ Senator Barack Obama is hands down the most authentic statesmen this country has known since RFK. Unfortunately, such qualities are sadly lacking in Hillary Clinton. Clinton's behavior in the recent week's Democratic primary races has, however, been reminiscent of a kind of passive-aggressive version of Rovian politics. Clinton's three-a.m.-phone-call television ad co-opted the familiar Neo-con scare tactic: We should all be afraid. This was followed by her statements last week that only she and John McCain are qualified to be president, which may have effectively placed a wedge between her and the majority of Democrats, who increasingly believe a McCain presidency would represent nothing more than a third Bush term. It's as if Democrats are actually expected to buy into Hillary's notion that somehow Senator Obama is unqualified to be President because, his experience as a neighborhood community organizer and the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, as a civil rights lawyer and a constitutional law professor, after serving eight years in the Illinois State Legislature, lowering the taxes of middle class Americans, as a U.S. Senator passing bipartisan legislation to secure loose nukes, and a member of the Veteran's Affairs committee working to secure benefits for our nation's veterans, that his gift for oration and his uncanny ability to authentically connect with everyday Americans . . . is all he has? In her CBS interview last week, she all but questioned Barack's 20 year membership in the United Church of Christ. By insinuation and feigning ignorance of his Christian faith, Clinton played to the despicable right-wing tactics of swift-boating her opponent-given the recent spat of Republican e-mails floating the fantastic notion of Barack as a radical Muslim. Whoever started the slanderous rumors should be ashamed and so should Hillary Clinton for not speaking out forcefully against them. By playing to fear in both cases, Clinton embraced the politics-as-usual tactics of fear mongering and innuendo, apparently to gain a perceived political advantage over her opponent. And in doing so, she clearly demonstrated, at least to me, that she herself lacks the character and courage to be Commander in Chief. We've had seven years of White House behavior running the gamut of questionable to unethical. Do we really need or deserve another four years of it, with a passive-aggressive Hilary Clinton administration? As a Democrat, I never thought I'd say this, but I sure hope not. To the contrary, I'm committed to doing what ever it takes right here in Clark County that Barack Obama is elected the next President of the United States. |
